ABOUT
Artist, maker Stephanie Buttle uses diverse approaches within her practice influenced by her former professional experiences within dance, performance and lens-based mediums. The material qualities of clay and the contrasting processes available within ceramics, act to express the artist’s fascination with the politics of intimacy and the discovering and presenting of an experience that often includes a performative element and a personal physical component.
Stephanie studied at Central Saint Martins from 2012 -2015 gaining a first class honours degree in Ceramics. Since graduating, her work both sculptural and installation has exhibited nationally including the Lethaby Gallery London, Pangolin Gallery London, Messums Wiltshire and Cork street London, Makers Gallery Hauser & Wirth and at the Port Elliot Festival 2015 -17-19 with Hole & Corner Magazine. Invited as a guest speaker at Ceramic Art London 2018. Featured articles in publication including Crafts magazine, Village Raw and Hole&Corner magazine. Artist residencies include 22hands a site responsive collaboration with artist Duncan Hooson during the British Ceramic Biennial 2019. In 2018/19 was recipricant of a Cockpit award.
Prior to attending Central Saint Martins she danced professionally both as a classical and contemporary dancer, acting credits include supporting actress to Juliette Binoche and William Hurt in the feature film 'Couch in New York' Director Chantal Akerman. She has directed short films, commercials and music videos. Stephanie holds position as visiting artist and tutor in Ceramics at Morley College, London and for the outreach dept at Central Saint Martins.
